NFL Players Association Executive Director Gene Upshaw says he believes the owners are setting the stage for a lockout that could threaten the 2011 NFL season.
“That’s where we’re headed. They’re going to try to lock us out,” Upshaw tells Lester Munson of ESPN.com.
The Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire after the 2010 season, and the owners and the players appear far off from any type of negotiations that could lead to an agreement to extend labor peace beyond 2010. The owners think they gave up too much during the last round of negotiations.
“They think [the current deal] is too rich for the players, and they want to take some back,” Upshaw said.
Adds union attorney Jeffrey Kessler, “The problem is that the owners could not agree among themselves on how they would share their revenues. The high-revenue teams do not want to share money they earn in their markets, and the low-revenue teams are unhappy about everything. So they find a place to agree — they try to get it back from the players.”
The 2011 season might feel like it’s a long way off, but the owners and the union should be addressing these issues now to avoid a labor stoppage.

I am not a contract attorney nor do I have any expertise in labor negotiations but this seems like the wrong way to go about securing amicable negotiations. I would appreciate a word from the experts on what is NOT constructive to proper labor negotiations like the above primary players lobbing provoking sound bites to the media. If the culprits can be exposed early, then the worst might be avoided. It feels like someone is trying to defer culpability in the future by instilling a potentially self fulfilling prophecy.
Thanks,
Jim Morris, Austin

When Larry Fitzgerald and Jamarcus Russell can make more or the same as guys like Favre and Moss we have a serious problem.
I don’t have any problem with a Peyton Manning getting his 100 mil after 4 or 5 years of service but the rookie contracts are going way beyond absurd.
The system make not be completely broke but it has a flat wheel or two at least and the NFL needs to fix it and if the players want to whine then lock them out.

Pure posturing. Am I the only one confused? Wasn’t Upshaw the players lead negotiator with the owners? Were the owners asleep at the switch when they agreed to the CBA? I guess there just isn’t enough money to pass around to keep everyone happy. Give me 4 years of 3rd string QB money and I’m set for life.
