Though rumors of a done deal between the Patriots and receiver Randy Moss are apparently premature, a league source tells us that the two sides are closing in on an agreement.

As far as we can tell, other teams realized that Randy’s weekend effort to find another suitor was, in reality, an attempt to dredge up an offer that would then prompt the Pats to pay more.  If no other offers came, we can’t help but wonder whether Monday’s announcement of a huge-money deal between the Steelers and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger prompted the Pats to sweeten the pot in order to get the thing done.
